Not only is Hannah Wilson’s wedding featured in Canterbury Bride, but she’s also a professional makeup artist.

So, who better to send some quickfire makeup questions to than someone who both makes up brides but has recently been a bride herself.

How do you approach creating a unique bridal makeup look that reflects each client’s personality?

Communication is key! As soon as a bride reaches out, I will always ask if they have any inspiration photos or ideas to work off. If they don’t, I suggest having a look at my Instagram or checking out Pinterest. A lot of the time brides will give you the freedom to do what you think is best which is where communication comes through, ensuring they’re happy every step of the way and making any changes as you go along.

What are the current trends in bridal makeup, and how do you incorporate them into your work?

Natural makeup always comes out on top – brides still want to look like themselves and find it less shocking once the look is complete. A subtle light brown smoky eye with gold or peach tones will always complement a bride or bridal party.

How do you ensure your bridal makeup photographs beautifully?

I always make sure that during set-up I find the best natural lighting if possible. Depending on the weather or if I haven’t been able to set up in the best lighting, I’ll look at the bridal party outside or under different lighting.

What are some common challenges you face as a wedding makeup artist?

Unsure bridal parties! The key is to bring that confidence out of them, making sure they feel beautiful and happy with their looks and reassuring them that once the hair is done and the dress is on it will all come together; this is why trials are important.

How do you collaborate with brides to understand their preferences?

Asking for inspiration pictures and just communication, communication, communication! It may seem ‘over the top’ but asking all the questions is key. Even if they seem insignificant, getting a real understanding for what the bride wants is best.

Would you recommend a makeup trial?

Yes! It’s good to know how the makeup will look and feel before the big day. It will also put your mind at ease knowing exactly what you’re going to get and ensures you have time to make changes if there are small things you’re not happy with. Booking your trial in for an engagement shoot or party is a great option.

What advice do you have for brides who want their makeup to last the whole day?

Skincare! Having your skin in the best condition leading up to the day is most important to make sure your makeup stays on all day and night. Makeup artists should have the best products to ensure the longevity of your makeup.

What pieces of makeup does a bride supply herself?

I always recommend getting a lipstick or lip balm in a similar if not the same shade as the lipstick she’ll be wearing on the day. Along with some translucent powder and eyelash glue if they’re wearing eyelashes, you never know what will happen and it’s always best to have the necessities!
